LAKE CHAPALA ACTIVITIES

Lake Chapala has one of the largest ex-pat communities in Mexico, the largest lake in Mexico and since we also have the best weather in the world, it is not hard to believe that there are lots of things to do in the area!  When you take into account that we are less than an hour away from Guadalahara - which is a city of 4.5 million inhabitants and is rich with culture, architecture, shopping, arts and dining the possibilities seem endless.

It has been estimated that the size of the ex-pat community in the Lake Chapala area exceeds 40,000 people.  While most are American and Canadian there also people from Europe and many other parts of the world.  What this means is that there is a wide selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs that cater to a diverse group of this size.  There are ove fifty social organizatins, community groups and clubs that offer pursuits as diverse as Texas line dancing, computer studies for both Mac and PC, duplicate bridge, culinary arts and sewing.

But please don't stop there!  Mexico has an incredibly rich and diverse culture complete with traditional arts and cratsmanship, markets, fiestas and religious ceremonies and also many events such as Charreadas - a national sport since the 1930's which feature intricate displays of riding and ropework as well as vibrantly colored costumes rich in emdroidery and needlework.  The local Huichol indians are very prolific in artwork that features incredibly complex patterns in beadwork and yarn art sure to please even the most ardent collector.

The city of Guadalahara is just a short drive up the highway, and there are a great number of smaller communities near the Lake Chapala area that have much to offer as well.  One thing is sure - anyone who comes to this area whether for a vacation or to retire will not find themselves bored - even for a minute!
